Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation
The Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation directs programs that help to empower disadvantaged, lower-income individuals, small businesses, and the non-profit organizations that serve them. By donating Intuit’s tax preparation, financial management and accounting software and online services, the Foundation promotes financial literacy and independence, helping people and organizations master their finances and bridge the digital divide.
The Intuit Tax Freedom Project
The Foundation’s signature program is the Intuit Tax Freedom Project. Through this effort, Intuit donates online tax preparation services to hardworking Americans, helping them to file more than 21 million tax returns – valued at almost $300 Million — since 1998. Taxpayers who meet the eligibility requirements announced at the beginning of each tax season can use TurboTax Freedom Edition Online (www.taxfreedom.com) — a version of Intuit’s popular tax preparation software — to accurately prepare and e-file their returns for FREE. TurboTax ensures that taxpayers claim all the deductions and credits they deserve, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.
Since 2003, Intuit’s donation of TurboTax Freedom Edition has also been available through the IRS Free File Alliance (FFA), an innovative, public-private partnership between the Internal Revenue Service and tax-software companies like Intuit. Twenty one state tax revenue departments have created state Free File programs modeled after the IRS program, allowing their eligible taxpayers to prepare and file their federal and state tax returns for free.
Intuit Product Donation Program
In addition to donations of TurboTax through the Intuit Tax Freedom Project and the Free File programs, the Foundation’s product donation program offers many of Intuit’s popular financial management and accounting software packages, such as Quicken®, QuickBooks® and Mint.com, – to eligible nonprofit organizations to help them manage their finances, or to use in empowerment programs in personal financial literacy, small business development, and workforce training. Much of the software is available through our partner TechSoup, a nonprofit technology resource that offers an online portal for nonprofits to obtain products.
Other Foundation Initiatives
The Foundation is also involved in other initiates that help lower-income individuals and families achieve financial independence. They include:
- Sponsorship of former California First Lady Maria Shriver’s “WE Connect Campaign”
- The Federal WEb Connector Tool, an online tool that helps people determine their eligibility for EITC, Child Care Tax Credit, Federal Child and Dependent Care Expenses Credit, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children program (WIC)
- The Earned Income Tax Credit Calculator, an online tool that quickly helps people figure out if they are eligible for federal and state EITC
Intuit’s Other Philanthropic Work
Intuit’s philanthropic efforts are bolstered by a world-class, employee-run giving and volunteering program called “We Care & Give Back.” In 2009, nearly 13,000 US employees volunteered more than 10,000 hours at 145 nonprofit agencies across the country.
There is also the Intuit Foundation, a separate organization established to foster economic empowerment both nationally and in communities where Intuit has a significant number of employees. The Intuit Foundation funds grants made through alliances with nonprofits and the employee giving program, but does not consider unsolicited grant proposals.
In total, Intuit’s philanthropic foundations and its employees contributed over $87 million in cash, products, and services in 2009 alone.
About Intuit, Inc.
Intuit started small in 1983 with its Quicken personal finance software, simplifying a common household dilemma: balancing the family checkbook. Now in its third decade, Inuit employs more than 7,000 people, is publicly traded on the Nasdaq Stock Market, and has been recognized as America’s most-admired software company and one of the country’s best places to work. Intuit remains committed to creating a greater array of “Right for Me” customer-driven products and services to help manage a broader array of small businesses. And of course, it’s still at the side of millions, helping balance that checkbook on a Saturday afternoon or complete that tax return by April 15th.
